This week, I was absolutely devastated to learn that what is bound to be one of the most epic drag performances ever is happening in a city I DON’T live in. Peaches Christ is producing a stage version of Hocus Pocus in San Francisco, titled “Coven: Return of the Manderson Sisters,” and teaming up with none other than RuPaul’s Drag Race alumni Jinkx Monsoon and Ben DeLaCreme. For those of you not in the loop, Jinkx was Season 5’s winner, (whose impression of Little Edie is the definition of perfection), and Ben DeLaCreme killed as Maggie Smith in Season 6’s Snatch Game. I mean, seriously, if that is not a recipe for the most fantastic version of “I put a Spell on you,” I don’t know what is.
But luckily, I can have close to the next best thing this coming Tuesday, September 16th at Hamburger Mary’s Drag Charity Bingo! The event isn’t unique to Kansas City. Hamburger Mary’s West Hollywood location has hosted many Drag Bingos, which I unfortunately never made it out too. I’m excited to finally experience the hilarity and excitement I’ve heard so much about, and to support an awesome cause, as this night will be in support of Keep Kansas City Beautiful.
Keep Kansas City Beautiful, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, involves citizens, businesses and government in creating a cleaner and more beautiful Kansas City region. The organization operates under Bridging the Gap, a KC non-profit that fosters environmental sustainability through programs that connect “environment, economy and community.” Since 2000, Keep KC Beautiful has been dedicated to litter removal, public garden creation and raising awareness on personal steps we can all take to make a positive impact on the environment. Some of their recent efforts have included the “Littering is Wrong Too” campaign, and being present at major KC sporting events to promote recycling among Royals and Chiefs fans.
Though this will be my first Drag Bingo, I do know that KC’s super talented drag queens are one of this city’s best-kept secrets. The Dirty Dorothy Show at Missie B’s in Westport is as good, if not better than what I’ve seen in WeHo.
If you want to be part of the fun on Tuesday September 16th from 7:00-9:00 p.m., the suggested donation is just $10 for 10 cards!
